Honda Motor is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Honda Accord, one of the company’s most important global sedan nameplates. Since the first model appeared in 1976, Accord has reached more than 160 countries and recorded cumulative global sales of more than 25 million units.

Honda’s own timeline highlights how each Accord generation introduced new engineering, safety, comfort, and electrification ideas over the past five decades.

How Each Honda Accord Generation Evolved
First generation (1976) introduced Honda’s CVCC combustion technology and a Service Guide system for maintenance and vehicle-status alerts.

Second generation (1981) advanced speed-responsive power steering, 3D Rear Damper suspension, and the Electro Gyrocator, an early landmark in automotive navigation.

Third generation (1985) brought four-wheel double wishbone suspension to a front-wheel-drive sedan, giving Accord a more sophisticated handling foundation.

Fourth generation (1989) adopted advanced honeycomb body construction to improve rigidity and cabin quietness.

Fifth generation (1993) pushed Accord further into the mature midsize sedan space, with more comfort, cabin space, and global-market refinement.

Sixth generation (1997) introduced pioneering preventive safety technologies including driver drowsiness detection, along with early Honda EPS and VSA systems.

Seventh generation (2002) moved Accord into intelligent driver support with HiDS, including LKAS and adaptive cruise control.

Eighth generation (2008) emphasized size, stability, comfort, and long-distance confidence for D-segment sedan buyers.

Ninth generation (2013) marked Accord’s electrified era with Sport Hybrid i-MMD, a two-motor hybrid system with intelligent drive-mode switching.

Tenth generation (2017) moved to a new platform, sportier design, more digital cabin technology, and stronger emphasis on hybrid power and Honda SENSING.

Eleventh generation (2024-present) brings Honda SENSING 360, Honda SENSING 360+, and the latest e:HEV system for stronger safety, efficiency, and driving balance.

Bangkok Motorhaus Perspective
Accord’s 50-year milestone is not only about longevity. It also shows Honda’s ability to tune a global model for different regions instead of forcing one exact formula everywhere. North America, Europe, Asia, and Thailand have all asked for different balances of comfort, handling, value, efficiency, and premium feel.
From an engineering point of view, Accord has often served as a technology creator for Honda. CVCC, Electro Gyrocator, double wishbone suspension, i-MMD hybrid technology, e:HEV, and the latest Honda SENSING systems all show how Accord has carried important brand technologies into a mainstream sedan package.
The challenge for Honda today is the fast rise of Chinese EVs in nearby price segments. Accord’s proven chassis durability, system stability, safety technology, hybrid efficiency, and long-term resale value must be communicated clearly if Honda wants this sedan family to remain relevant for the next era.
