BMW and SOLARWATT launch Neue Klasse V2H home energy management system

BMW Group and SOLARWATT have announced an intelligent home energy management package for Neue Klasse electric vehicles. The system is designed to turn an EV into an additional mobile energy storage unit that can feed electricity back into the home.

The announcement was released on June 15, 2026. BMW says the technical and commercial details will be presented at The smarter E / Intersolar Europe 2026 at Messe München, Germany, from June 23 to 25, 2026. Market launch is planned for Germany, Austria and the Netherlands in late 2026.

Smart home energy management

The system combines Neue Klasse vehicles, the BMW Wallbox Professional and the SOLARWATT Manager home energy management system. The HEMS coordinates energy flows among photovoltaic panels, home storage, the electric vehicle and household consumers.

Neue Klasse vehicles are designed for bidirectional charging, which means the car does not only consume electricity. It can also act as an energy storage unit and feed electricity back into the home through Vehicle-to-Home, or V2H, operation.

BMW Wallbox Professional and SOLARWATT Manager

The BMW Wallbox Professional is the bidirectional charging interface between the vehicle high-voltage battery and the home power system. BMW says it will also be available to order through SOLARWATT, with delivery scheduled from the fourth quarter of 2026.

The SOLARWATT Manager uses solar forecasts, household energy demand and dynamic electricity tariffs to optimize when the vehicle or home storage should charge or discharge. This can help store energy when costs are lower and use it in the home when electricity demand or prices are higher.

Customers use two main apps. The My BMW App manages vehicle charging targets and departure times, while the SOLARWATT Home app manages priorities for household energy consumers.

V2H focuses on home use

The new package focuses on Vehicle-to-Home rather than Vehicle-to-Grid. Instead of primarily selling electricity back to the public grid, the home can use energy stored in the vehicle battery directly, increasing self-consumption of solar power and reducing reliance on grid electricity.

BMW and SOLARWATT have worked together in electromobility and home energy since 2013. The new HEMS package extends that cooperation into a more connected home energy ecosystem for the Neue Klasse era.

Bangkok Motorhaus Perspective

The BMW and SOLARWATT move is about more than selling another electric vehicle. It is about selling a full energy ecosystem, giving BMW a stronger technology position in the premium EV market. Pairing Neue Klasse vehicles with V2H home integration puts BMW closer to competitors that already think in terms of cars, batteries and home energy as one package.

The most interesting engineering point is the SOLARWATT Manager ability to optimize energy use through solar forecasts and dynamic tariffs. In Europe, especially during low-sunlight seasons, this can make the vehicle a valuable energy buffer: charge when electricity is cheaper, then support the home when demand or prices rise.

The challenge is system complexity and upfront cost. Customers need a compatible Neue Klasse vehicle, the BMW Wallbox Professional, SOLARWATT Manager and a home electrical setup ready for bidirectional energy flow. Clear payback communication will be essential, especially if BMW wants to expand this model beyond Europe into markets with different tariffs and solar-connection rules.

If the system works as smoothly as promised, BMW EVs could become more than transportation. They could become daily energy assets that lower costs and add practical value to the home.
